REAL ELECTIONS for REAL CITIZENS
We had a wonderful time on two successive Saturdays in May gathering the required petition signatures to put me on the ballot for Cache County Clerk.
On a Saturday morning, May 11th, Todd Henry, Manager of the north Logan CAL Ranch, was kind to let us set up a little pavilion and tables in front of the store entrance. We were positively bowled over at the overwhelmingly positive response to our message of REAL ELECTIONS for REAL CITIZENS.
Guess what?! A lot of Franklin County, Idahoans, as well as quite a few Utahns from over the mountain in neighboring Box Elder County, shop here, too. They were glad to help by signing our petitions, too 😊, but we had to turn them down as out-of-County ineligibles. Ha hah. But we thanked them for their good wishes.
My wife and I and a few friends gathered 150 signed petitions — half the legal requirement —, in a few hours. Thank you, DeAnn and Mark Jensen and Kirk Kimball! Thank you, my Lovely Lilian! And Steve Porter and Todd Holland just showed up unannounced and helped, too! Man, what great Americans! And thanks to our daughter Le and her husband Brett, who came by with kids in tow to give us lunch.
On the next Saturday, we set up a booth on the grounds of the final day of Richmond’s 109th annual Black and White Days. Wow, what a great time! Seems all the best people bring their families out. There was something for young and old and in-between, including cow races and even a Highland caber toss. Dang, I was miffed to miss that while manning the booth! We hung up the large, heavy cotton casket flag that I presented to my Lovely Lilian when she became an American Citizen. She put up a portrait of me as an Ensign in my Service Dress Blues. “But I’m only an Ensign in that picture, Dear,” I objected. “That’s ok,” she said, “I like it, because you were so young and handsome before I knew you.”
We met the same earnestly enthusiastic response, as on the previous Saturday in front of CAL Ranch in Logan. We collected another 300-plus signed petitions without breaking a sweat. All right, it WAS hot, and, in my favorite rugby shirt, I probably was dressed a bit warm. But, again, the response was overwhelming. Cache County voters are ready, I think, to see Real Elections again and are ready to do the work to make it happen.
Thank you, David Benson, Mark Jensen, and Kirk Kimball! Thank you, Lilian! Thank you, Cache County citizens! Let’s get this done! My personal thanks to Roger Priest and the Richmond Lions Club for letting us set up a booth and for giving us such a great location!
