Back in 2013 several West Virginia University students were able to acquire and test some of Volkswagen’s popular fuel efficient diesel vehicles. They discovered that the engines were programmed to watch for conditions associated with emissions testing and to immediately activate pollution controls during the tests but not during ordinary driving, thus passing the tests but giving owners spectacular fuel mileage. This discovery led to a massive scandal and backlash against the company, resulting in over 20 billion dollars in fines and legal settlements. Along the way, executives and engineers tried to cover up the illegal software by feeding regulators false and misleading data, employees destroyed thousands of potentially incriminating documents, management blamed engineers, and Volkswagens’ market price crumbled. Some think that a core group of about 37 conspirators orchestrated what some call the ‘diesel-gate’ scandal.
Segue: Back in the olden days we processed ballots like this: we voted in our precincts and witnessed the hand-counting. The hand-counts from each precinct in the county were collected and counted by witnesses in the courthouse. In summary, all ballot counts were witnessed in the each precinct and all precinct tallys were summed-up at the courthouse with witnesses. Snappy quick and no multi-year anguish.
Here is how we process ballots today: voting machines are ‘emission-tested’ just prior to election-month, ballots are gathered from drop-boxes and added to ballots received by mail at the courthouse. The ballots are fed thru scanners which interpret the scans and count the votes. Nothing is witnessed, nothing is adequately explained, nobody can understand the whole system from end-to-end and years-later we are still arguing.
What’s the relationship between Volkswagens’ “diesel-gate” and electronic-elections?
VW engines are to travel…as election-machines are to voting.
Emission-tests are to cars…as ‘logic and accuracy tests’ are to elections.
Conspiring executives & engineers were to VW…as election-fraud-organizers are to computerized voting.
Cars can be tested freely by anyone…but election machines are off-limits for independent testing.
Both ‘diesel-gate’ and the current election-fraud-cabal; conceal, destroy, conveniently-loose and fail-to-preserve incriminating documents & inconvenient data, share false & misleading information, blame others for lost-trust...and themselves trend down in public-trust.
